"It's not the tryptophan in the turkey that makes us sleepy on Thanksgiving Day, it's what you eat with the turkey...
It's true that tryptophan is a relaxer, but what really makes us tired is eating all of those starchy carbs with the protein (turkey). Think about all of those carbs on the Thanksgiving dinner table. There's mashed potatoes, dressing, rolls, etc.
It takes 2 different enzymes to break down starches and proteins. When eaten in the same meal, digestion slows down and is less efficient because it is trying to break down two completely different types of foods (proteins and starchy carbs) at the same time. Many times the food is not completely digested.
Next time you eat turkey...or any protein for that matter, try eating it with vegetables instead. Eating proteins with vegetables helps foods digest properly and more efficiently. It also helps free up energy in the body, giving you more energy for jogging...instead of sleeping after dinner.
